In June 2009, Annie Poulain released her latest album, Saoulée à l’autre. Not only did Annie perform the vocals, she wrote, composed and arranged more than half of the pieces found on this recording.
Fans of Diana Krall, Edgar Bori, Liane Foly, Sylvain Lelièvre, Maurane, Claude Nougaro, Michel Legrand…will enjoy Annie’s orginal songs as well as her jazz-flavored renditions of popular francophone melodies such as Couleur Café and Foule Sentimentale. The album features an interesting mix of some pieces which are more commercial in nature and others which will surprise and entrance with the originality of their arrangements. In all, the album has ten songs which seem to flow logically into each other from beginning to end. In the wake of this flow, as a kind of postscript, the listener is left with “Genn Yon Chimen”, a song in Haitian Creole which was added to the album at the last moment.
It is art without pretence, one moment inspiring a joyful lightness of being and the next moment touching a deeper chord in our hearts. It is a music which is alive in its celebration of life, music, and sensuality.
