Annie Poulain
LEADER
BIOGRAPHY

Annie Poulain is a singer who works her magic through the media of jazz and the French language. To this mix, she brings her own special alto voice, a voice which lends its own distinctive sound to her recordings. Annie has a special reverence for the music and poetry of her native tongue and takes great pleasure in crafting the lyrics and arrangements of her pieces with the sonority of the French language.

In response to this interest in the underlying logic of musical expression and in a deeper understanding of its theories, structures, harmonies and rhythms, Annie is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in  musical studies at Laval University with Gilles Ouellet, Gabriel Hamel, and Claude Vallières. At the same time, she is working on a master’s degree in jazz interpretation with the singer Ranee Lee, once again at Laval University.
Both her first album, Jazzons Québec, released in 2006, and her show, Rêver en couleur, which has been presented in Quebec, in Canada, and abroad, have been met with considerable public and critical acclaim. This first jazz album, in addition to its sales of over 2500 copies, won three Champlain prizes at the Quebec Music Gala of 2009: the best jazz album, the best jazz production, and the best studio sound awards. Noteworthy in her more recent performance were two shows given at the ‘Festival de Jazz de Port-au-Prince’ in Haiti as well as performances at the Quebec City and the Levis Jazz Festivals and during numerous summer and private concerts.
