Jean-Nicolas Trottier has been a very active figure on the Montréal jazz scene since 2000.In addition to regular freelance work, he has participated in various classical and jazz music projects with the Jean-Nicolas Trottier Quartet, Jean-Nicolas Trottier Trio, Opus Lib brass quintet, Public Transport Project, Montréal Dixie, Montréal Jazz Big Band, Joe Sullivan Big Band, ID jazz quintet, Bernard Primeau Jazz Ensemble, Trombones Actions, Vic Vogel's Jazz Big Band, Altsys Jazz Orchestra, Lorraine Desmarais Big Band and Alain Caron Big Band. He was also a member of McGill Jazz Orchestra I from 2001 to 2003.
Jean-Nicolas has long been interested in composition and arrangement, be it for smaller groups or for large-scale ensembles. He founded the Jean-Nicolas Trottier Big Band, of which he is composer, arranger and leader. The group plays regularly in Montréal, and was notably invited to perform at the 2006 Off Festival de Jazz's closing concert,followed by an appearance at the same festival's 2007 opening concert. Jean-Nicolas Trottier has also worked as arranger for Blok Note Big Band, Modern Time Big Band, Patrick Watson, DJ Champion, Ariane Moffat, and Amylie Boisclair.
Jean-Nicolas received the Galaxy Rising Star award at the Ottawa Jazz Festival in 2003, and was voted Discovery of the Year at the 2005 Off Festival de Jazz.He earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance with Distinction from McGill University in 2005, and is currently jazz trombone lecturer at Université de Montréal and jazz trombone professor at Vanier College.
