Révélation Radio-Canada Musique 2010-2011

Rafael Zaldivar was born in Camagüey, Cuba. Coming from a family of musicians, he started playing percussion and piano at age 10 and pursued his undergraduate studies at the Superior Art Institute of Havana. Moving to Canada at age 22, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Montreal and a Master’s degree at McGill University within three years.

Rémi Bolduc comes from St-Hyacinthe, a city north of Montreal. By 15, he was already playing saxophone professionally. Back then, jazz was very much on his mind and by 19, he was to settle in Montreal where he would work on his trade with saxophonists Sayydd Abdul el Khabbyyr, Simon Stone and Bob Mover. Shortly after his arrival in town, he was noticed by big band leader and composer Vic Vogel, who would immediately praise his new protégé by saying that “he plays like the devil”!

Active musician on the Montreal jazz scene for over 25 years, trombonist Richard Gagnon takes part of the Montreal Jazz scene for many years with the Vic Vogel Big Band, Guy Nadon, Lorraine Desmarais, JazzLab, Jo Sullivan Big Band as well as his own group, the Richard Gagnon Trombones Actions.

Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, bassist/composers Sage Reynolds moved to Montréal, Québec in the mid-nineties to pursue his studies and make a life for himself as a professional musician. Sage's training consists of a Bachelor of Music Degree (Jazz Perf.) at McGill University ('00), private study (w/ Jordan O'Connor, Michel Donato, Alec Walkington, John Hebert, and others), and participation in many master classes and seminars, including a bass master class with Mark Dresser and participation in The International Jazz Workshop at The Banff Centre for the Arts ('99), where he played and studied with Dave Holland, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, and Kenny Werner.
