The winners were announced last Monday, June 22, at the Lion D’Or in Montréal.
This year’s revelations include rapper Samian, the dynamic Acadian band Radio-Radio, and the multi-cultural world music group Bambara Trans. The jury chose Cuban-born pianist Rafael Zaldivar as jazz revelation of the year.

After winning First Prize in the Jupiter-Vandoren New Talent Contest (part of the 2009 Jazz en Rafale series), Rafael recorded his debut album “Life Directions” on Effendi Records. Released in March 2010, the album proved a resounding success for the young pianist whose outstanding virtuosity never ceases to amaze. His resolutely modern jazz draws inspiration from his Cuban roots, as evidenced in the distinctive percussive quality of his playing style.

The “Révélations Radio-Canada Musique” is an initiative designed to promote and support upcoming and promising artists. The program rewards young artists who have distinguished themselves during the past year by offering them enhanced visibility on all Radio-Canada platforms, as well as a “career development plan” adapted to each winner’s musical style and specific career path. It’s a unique chance for these young and talented artists to launch their professional careers and reach a wider audience.

Rafael Zaldivar has been honoured with another award in his burgeoning career as leader.
Winner of numerous prizes in Cuba, 2009 Jazz en Rafale New Talent Contest winner, Révélation Radio-Canada Musique for 2010-2011, OPUS Jazz Album of the Year nominee and semi-finalist at the Martial Solal International Jazz Piano Competition in Paris, Rafael has now been named “Découverte de l’année” by the CQM. And it’s only the latest of many accolades for this young Cuban pianist. Since adopting Québec as his new home in 2005, he has quickly risen to the forefront of the Québec jazz scene.

The “Découverte de l’année” award comes with a cash prize of $3000 courtesy of Mr. David Sela, president of COPAP.
The prize also includes access to Radio-Canada’s superb studios for his next album recording. This fits in perfectly with the ongoing goals of the “Révélations Radio-Canada Musique” initiative, as Rafael continues to benefit from visibility on the network’s Espace Musique radio service and its web radio stations.
